If you get an R-hop installed into your rifle, you'll be shooting pretty accurately at insane range. I have an A&K SVD, which is usually considered a wall-hanger. I paid 12 bucks for a local tech to R-hop it. It is now capable of sending a .36g BB out to 300-ish feet with decent accuracy. The consistency is also amazing.
DISCLAIMER:
By no means does possessing a far-shooting rifle make you a sniper. It makes you a person with a far-shooting rifle. Although snipers often use such rifles, using one does not make you a sniper. A sniper is a self-loathing person who spends inordinate amounts of time perfecting (literally making to be perfect) their rifle and camo. Even more insanely, they wear full ghillie suits in the heat of summer. Did I mention that they are often met with failure until they have been at this sniper business for usually over a year (more often, multiple years)? So, if you want to be a sniper, you're in for one hell of a tough journey. That being said, nothing beats being a true sniper.
Being a long-range grunt is another story. You also need to hate yourself. I would know. I'm restricted to a bare-bones ALICE rig due to how much I need to go from fireteam to fireteam to provide fire at long distance. I also need to have decent camo to survive being requisitioned by various squads, meaning full BDU's plus a camo face cover. I'm usually dripping sweat with only one canteen of water for a day's skirmishing. Oh, and this is when it's 72 and not humid. Did I also mention that you'll be blamed for every screwup that happens to your team? Oh, well you'll be blamed for every screwup that happens to your team. I could go on and on about this, but I'll spare you the Berlin Wall of text.
