Not sure why you'd want a sniper, but...
Gas guns are inconsistent, because temperature affects them a lot. Also easier to cock, since you aren't preparing your firing system.
Spring guns don't depend on temperature, and are harder to cock, as you have the pull the spring back. For realism, the mag is typically way too far forward also.
I know for the spring platform, I've seen a lot more BAR10s/VSRs than L96s. The Remington platform I think tends to be lighter just due to shape, and I always hear people recommending the BAR10 as a great platform for a sniper build.
EDIT: Yes, I know the real reasons why some would want a sniper rifle, but I just thought I'd point out that sniping is not for everyone. Personally, I hate, and can't do it.
