Big trouble for airsoft =(

Postby Desert Fox » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:02 am

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/11-12/bil ... _comm.html

This bill would include BB guns within the current requirements
pertaining to "imitation firearms" that are prohibited for
manufacture or sale in California unless the entire exterior
surface of the device is white, bright red, bright orange,
bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright
purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination
with other colors in any pattern, as provided by federal
regulations governing imitation firearms, or where the entire
device is constructed of transparent or translucent materials
which permits unmistakable observation of the device's complete
contents, as provided by federal regulations governing imitation
firearms.

We are doomed if this passes....

Hasn't passed yet thankfully.

What it basically does is include BB style guns (including airsoft) in the existing law requiring them to be eith brightly colored or clear. They were exempted before because they already follow the federal law that they have blaze orange tip, but apparently in 2004 it was ruled in NY that a county could require the full bright coloration which I don't completely understand or agree with because the point of the federal law was to supersede state and local laws on the matter...
The opposition arguement that was stated raises a good point. If bb and airsoft guns are included in the description as toys and are those "cute colors" I feel like there'd be more injuries from people not respecting fact that they can cause injury if you're not careful.

All this because of some dumb kids shooting each other with airsoft guns in the middle of a street...

I feel like you should have to be a designated retailer to be able to sell airsoft guns. That way kids can stop buying them from Big5 and ice cream trucks and just play around like idiots in the street.

No arguement there. I like how they try to blame the sport for being dangerous, someone had to buy those kids the airsoft guns or bb guns, they're 13 and 14. If anything, they should be working to make the parents understand that airsoft guns take responsibility to operate and SHOULD NEVER be used in public or when you don't have consent to play somewhere.

Is there supposed to be some kind of public hearing for this? Or do I need to write a letter to the state senate? I must get my voice out there on this bill.

Not sure, but you could try a petition to go along with a letter, I'll be the first to sign it if they accept it from a non California resident.

Wait, so if you see kids shooting eachother with bb guns in public, having them colored brightly is supposed to make people feel safer? WTF.

Why don't they just tighten down on penalties for those who play airsoft in public.
